Autodesk Inventor Professional 8 - Features and Benefits

Autodesk Inventor Professional software is the choice for organizations that need a solution for advanced machinery design which is simple to implement and affordable. Today, these organizations must either buy and integrate several niche applications or purchase expensive solutions from other CAD/CAM software suppliers. Autodesk Inventor Professional software provides a single, integrated solution that offers the greatest breadth of functionality for the highest possible value.

This software is for mechanical and electrical engineers who want to increase productivity in designing, validating, and documenting complex machinery. Built on Autodesk Inventor Series software - which includes Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Mechanical Desktop software products - Autodesk Inventor Professional extends the functionality of Autodesk Inventor Series with a collection of process enhancement tools that focus on the specific needs of mechanical and electrical design engineers. With this single, integrated software product, users can address all aspects of the industrial machine design process.

Tube and Pipe Features and Benefits

Improve your tube and pipe design process while saving time and reducing errors. Fully integrated with Autodesk Inventor software, this module uses rule-based tools to quickly create and edit routes, then automatically place the fittings and create pipe segments.

Feature Description Benefit
Create a route
  • The Create Route tool creates a valid tube or pipe route. You select a start point, an endpoint, and intermediate points that are important to the design, and the tool then creates the route.
  • Use the auto-routing capabilities to select intermediate points or endpoints along the route.
  • The rule-based route tool helps you improve productivity by enabling you to quickly create a rigid tube or pipe route while automatically enforcing design rules.
  • The route tool saves you time by automatically calculating and creating segments between two points along the route.
  • Human error is eliminated since routes are automatically updated as required by assembly design changes, adding or removing segments to maintain your design rules.
Create a run
  • The Create Run tool creates tubes or pipes and automatic-ally places fittings as required to create the run.
  • Ensure design integrity by using rule-based design.
  • Create standard Autodesk Inventor parts that can be used for mass property calculations and interference analysis.
  • Pipe fittings and pipe segments, or a rigid tube, are automatically created on the route that you define.
  • Define commonly used tube and pipe styles to easily set materials, sizes, standards, and design rules. Use these styles while creating routes and runs, or quickly change an existing tube or pipe run from one style to another.
  • Couplings are automatically placed when pipes reach their maximum length.
  • Specify the pipe length cutoff increment used in your manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure routes are valid for the type of run that is being created.
  • Generate accurately mass property data of the entire assembly.
  • Decrease lead time and costs by performing interference analysis on the entire assembly before building the first prototype.
Edit route Edit the route by dragging sections, moving points, and adding or removing points. Save time by quickly and easily making changes to the route as required by your design.
Fittings library
  • The tube and pipe fittings library comes with commonly used industry-standard ISO, ANSI, DIN, and JIS fittings and pipes.
  • Tubes, pipes, and fittings can be added to the library and automatically used by the application to create runs.
  • Threaded, soldered, welded, and other fitting types are supported.
  • Save design time by using the ISO, ANSI, DIN, or JIS fittings library.
  • Add your own custom fitting, tube, and pipe content that can then be automatically placed on your route.
Parametric update Tube and pipe routes and runs automatically update, using design rules, when required by changes to the assembly. Save design time and increase quality since the design updates automatically.
Place fitting Add a fitting to an existing tube or pipe segment. The application breaks the existing tube or pipe into two parts. Save design time by dropping fittings, filters, and so forth onto an existing segment and the application automatically cuts back the pipe and adds a new pipe segment to complete the run.
Design rules
  • Set up and use design rules that define how routes and tube and pipe runs are created and updated.
  • Indicate permitted fittings, such as 45- or 90-degree elbows, and the routing tool automatically uses these rules to create routes that can be assembled using these fittings.
  • Determine minimum segment lengths.
  • Set the minimum bend radius for a tube style to ensure adequate flow and avoid overstressing.
  • Set the maximum pipe length of couplings.
  • Reduce design time by ensuring that your design conforms to your company’s manufacturing standards.
  • Ensure design quality and manufacturability using design rules.
  • Reduce engineering changes by ensuring manufacturability and assembly of your design.
  • Reduce costs by ensuring your design can be manufactured correctly the first time.
  • Save time by automatically placing couplings and starting a new pipe when a maximum length is reached.
  • Reduce costs by setting the pipe length cut increments supported by your manufacturing organization. The automatically created pipe lengths are adjusted to meet this criterion.
Create production-worthy drawings
  • Make accurate drawings that automatically update with design changes.
  • Create accurate parts lists with cut lengths.
  • Increase design quality and productivity by creating accurate drawings that automatically update when required.
  • Increase design accuracy by providing manufacturing with accurate cut-length information that reflects manufacturing standards.

IDF Import Features and Benefits

Industrial machinery and electro-mechanical designers are under increased pressure to reduce design time while improving product quality. Save time and improve accuracy by importing Intermediate Data Format (IDF) version 2 or 3 printed circuit geometry created in your printed circuit board (PCB) design software.

Feature Description Benefit
Import PCB Generate an accurate 3D model of a PCB by importing an industry-standard IDF file into an Autodesk Inventor assembly.
  • Accurately define mounting locations.
  • Maximize space use with accurate PCB size and shape information.
  • Avoid part interference and keep electronics from overheating by using keep-out data capture in the PCB design.
  • Consider assembly and maintenance needs early in the design process by ensuring adequate access to connectors and other components.
Import as a part Create a single part that represents the PCB. Simplify file management and optimize large-assembly performance by using a single part file to represent the entire PCB.
Import as an assembly Create an assembly that represents the PCB.
  • Get a full representation of the PCB in the Autodesk Inventor assembly browser and BOM.
  • Control visibility of individual PCB components using standard Autodesk Inventor assembly functionality.
Control the complexity of the imported PCB
  • Select which PCB components to import.
  • Control complexity by choosing whether to import drilled holes and keep-outs.
Choose to import the entire PCB, or reduce complexity by filtering out small components such as resistors that are not important to your mechanical design.
